Before the first appointment

Prepare your prescription, existing investigation reports and medicine list. Note how long symptoms have been present, what has changed and which activities are difficult. You do not need to identify the diagnosis yourself to describe your situation.

Mention accidents, surgery, arm symptoms, headaches and dizziness. Something that seems separate from neck pain may change assessment. With emergency signs, seek direct medical help first.

Understanding assessment

Depending on your situation, assessment may consider movement, activities, strength and nerve symptoms. It helps establish progression and whether further medical advice is needed. Imaging alone cannot replace this process.

Examination should be explained and adapted. You can ask what a test is checking, report discomfort and stop a movement. Tell the clinician about new signs between sessions rather than always waiting for the next appointment.

Choosing concrete goals

A goal may be looking to the side more easily, tolerating a task or returning to an activity. These provide measures beyond a pain score. Priorities should fit your daily life.

Progression may combine mobility, strength, endurance and task adjustments. Dose and pace depend on your response. There is no identical programme for every neck pain or number of sessions guaranteeing success.

Understanding the proposed approach

Education and active participation have an important role in common neck pain care. Hands-on techniques may be discussed as a complement. They should have a goal and should not make you dependent on repeated unblocking.

Ask what to do between sessions and how to recognise an excessive response. Useful instructions include movement, dose, adjustments and stop signs. The exercise page offers general examples to adapt after assessment.

When are other professionals involved?

Migraine needs appropriate medical management; jaw pain may need dental assessment; unexplained dizziness needs investigation. Neck treatment does not replace these steps. Evolving nerve symptoms may also require prompt referral.

Check specific needs and available care with the practice. This page does not confirm specialist vestibular, jaw or neurological services. Referral to a suitable professional can form part of useful care.

Reviewing the effect and adjusting the plan

Review chosen activities, sleep, exercise response and any new symptoms. Limited progress calls for discussion of dose, obstacles and, where necessary, diagnosis. Repeating the same technique without a goal is not the only option.

Improvement can be gradual and uneven. However, deteriorating strength, walking or hand precision should not be treated as an ordinary bad day. Follow appropriate medical advice in that situation.

Your questions

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Treatment at the practice requires a medical prescription. The First visit section explains useful documents and practical details.

Chapter sources [13]

Does the practice treat every cause of dizziness or jaw pain?

This guide does not confirm those specialisms. Contact the practice to check whether your needs match its services; further assessment or referral may be appropriate.

Chapter sources [4] [9]

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on assessment, goals and progress. A fixed number cannot be promised from a symptom or article.

Chapter sources [6]

Can I come straight to physiotherapy for a sudden severe headache?

No. An exceptionally severe sudden headache or sudden neurological signs need urgent medical help. Call 112 rather than waiting for physiotherapy.
