Prepare for your first visit

Kiné Diddeleng requests a medical prescription. Bring it with the relevant reports already available, the list of your treatments and the instructions received after an injury or operation. It is not necessary to request new imaging just to prepare for a session.

If you wear an splint or orthopaedic splint, bring it and specify the prescribed times to wear it. Note the onset of symptoms, fingers involved, changes in strength, and difficult tasks. Two or three concrete priorities are enough to start: sleeping, buttoning an item of clothing, carrying an object or picking up a tool. You do not need to present a self-chosen diagnosis.

Understand the symptoms and safety limits

The interview covers pain, sensation, mobility, progress and activities. The assessment can explore movements and skills appropriate to your situation. A problem felt in the hand may require looking at the elbow, shoulder or neck as well.

Warning signs come before exercises. A gradual loss of strength, persistent hand numbness, a hot joint or unusual pain after trauma may require further medical advice. The physiotherapy assessment does not replace all medical examinations. If the situation goes beyond the appropriate framework at the practice, referral to the appropriate professional is part of the process.

Set goals that matter to you

A useful goal describes an activity: opening a door more easily, returning to a short instrument session, or carrying a cup safely. The clinician works with you to find out what is currently limiting this task and the realistic steps to find it again.

Pain remains a marker, but it is not the only one. Strength, range of movement, precision, endurance and confidence can evolve differently. After a fracture or repair, load limits remain priority. An objective is not a promise of results on a fixed date; it is used to choose treatments and to check if they really help you.

An active and understandable program

Care may include explanations, progressive movements, strength work at appropriate times, and guidance for activities. Manual techniques can sometimes complement the approach, depending on their usefulness and your preference. They do not automatically put a nerve back into place or instantly repair a structure.

Ask the purpose of each exercise, starting amount, progression, and stopping criteria. A short program that can be done at home may be easier to integrate than a long list. The exercises section and its sheet can serve as support, provided that you select only the appropriate movements. The number of repetitions must remain compatible with your day and medical instructions.

After fracture, operation or tendon repair

Rehabilitation depends on the type of injury, stability and tissue repaired. Radius fracture, olecranon fixation, mallet finger, and tendon repair do not share a single protocol. Documents from the surgical team are therefore essential.

The movements, the splint and the loads are coordinated with these instructions. If specialized hand care or specific equipment is necessary, the appropriate solution must be checked with the practice and the medical team. The need for a custom splint is discussed with the clinician who can make it. A missing instruction must be clarified before an exercise likely to strain a repair.

Adapt daily life and monitor the reaction

The work also focuses on the movements which maintain the difficulty: support on the elbow, strong grip, prolonged grip or too rapid return to sport. The adaptations are chosen according to your constraints. They aim to allow you to stay active in an appropriate way, without imposing perfect posture.

Explain what happens after a session and the next day. Long-lasting worsening may lead to reducing the dose or changing the movement. New weakness, loss of sensation or unusual swelling requires medical re-evaluation rather than simply changing repetitions. Keep a few functional benchmarks to make monitoring concrete, without testing maximum strength every day.

In everyday life

Prepare three pieces of information for the appointment

  1. Your situation

Onset of symptoms, possible accident and change in strength or sensation.

  2. Your instructions

Prescription, splint, reports and restrictions after intervention.

  3. Your goal

A specific activity that you want to find again or make easier.

The available documents and your priorities help make the exchange useful.

Reassess and coordinate care

If progress is insufficient, the plan must be revised: real difficulty of the program, diagnosis, daily constraints or need for another opinion. The number and pace of sessions are not fixed by this guide. They depend on the evaluation, the indications and your progress.

For an inflammatory disease, nerve problem or CRPS, medical care and other professionals can have a central role. Physiotherapy complements them in its appropriate field. Ask who to contact if there is a change and when an update will be made. A lack of progress is not a fault of the patient and should not automatically lead to continuing the same approach indefinitely.

Your questions

Is a medical prescription required?

Yes, a prescription is requested from the practice. Also bring the instructions and useful reports already available. If you have a practical question about documents, call the practice; do not request new imaging just to complete a physiotherapy file.

Chapter sources [1]

Do you take care of all hand operations?

This page does not confirm a specialized offer for each intervention. The type of repair, protocol and needs should be verified with the practice and surgical team. Referral to a specialized professional may be necessary depending on the situation.

Chapter sources [11] [2]

How many sessions will it take?

The number depends on the assessment, the objectives, the indications and progress over time. It cannot be guaranteed from the name of a condition. Regular check-ups allow you to check the usefulness of the program, adjust the exercises or ask for new advice.

Chapter sources [1] [7]

Can I wait for my session if my hand becomes weak or numb?

A new or progressive loss of strength or sensation requires prompt medical attention, and some sudden changes are urgent. Read the warning signs page. Do not wait for a session or a callback from the practice for an urgent situation.
